Buckreddan Care Centre
Statement of Function

Buckreddan Care Centre has been owned and operated as a Nursing Home by Mr Andrew Fitzsimmons since 1986.

The Home has been managed since 1986 by Mrs Theresa Fitzsimmons, Care Manager.

Theresa has been a Registered Nurse since qualifying in 1985 and has been caring for older adults since 1986. As a Moving & Handling Instructor and a qualified Assessor and Internal Verifier with SQA, Theresa manages the training of carers, supporting all carers to achieve SVQ Care Level 2, and where appropriate SVQ Care Level 3. She has also completed the SVQ Management Level 4.

Buckreddan Care Centre has and will continue to be a family run business where the owners are very much involved in the day to day management of the Home.

At Buckreddan Care Centre we aim to support the physical, psychological and emotional need of both male and female residents by adopting a person centered approach to care.

We aim to achieve this by respecting resident's privacy, dignity and individuality as set out in our statement of resident's rights and by empowering our staff with the necessary skills and knowledge through our staff training policy.

To ensure individualised care is delivered, a key worker is appointed who will be responsible for compiling residents plan of care structured around the activities of daily living in consultation with resident and/or relatives, representatives or advocate and ensure it is updated at least monthly, or as changing needs dictate, to reflect accurately the residents care and support needs. The key worker will, after discussion with the resident, refer any change in condition to the appropriate member of the health care team.

A key worker will have achieved SVQ Care Level 2 and have or be working towards SVQ Care Level 3 or be a Registered Nurse, who has the necessary skills, knowledge and experience in adult care.

A formal review of each resident's care will be undertaken at least every six months.

The resident and/or their representative or advocate, together with the resident's key worker and another senior member of staff, will meet to discuss the effectiveness of existing care plan, discuss and agree any changes to care plan and address any concerns or complaints regarding residents care.

The key worker will write a formal report of review and any action points, this will be signed by Deputy/Care Manager. A copy of the report will be sent to all persons present and the social work department involved in the residents placement.

The original report is kept in the residents file.

Buckreddan Care Centre adopts an open management policy whereby all residents, relatives, staff and visitors are encouraged to discuss with senior staff, any concerns, complaints or suggestions they have. Complaint/suggestion leaflets are available within the home for anybody who would prefer to complete these.

Meetings are held every 2 months with management and staff to discuss any changes to policy and allow staff to recommend changes and/or improvements or express any concerns they have.

It is our policy that all residents, relatives, staff and visitors are confident that all complaints are taken seriously and addressed appropriately without fear of reprisals within 28 days.

There are two activities officer's employed who plan and co-ordinate a varied activities programme both within and out with the Home. Activities are planned to provide stimulation and to support residents in maintaining any existing hobbies or interests. The activities officers comply and maintain a social care plan for each resident, in consultation with the resident and/or relative, representative or advocate and resident's key worker.

Buckreddan Care Centre strives to maintain its link with the wider community and encourages visits from local volunteer groups and religious services. We adopt an open visiting policy between the hours of 9am and 9pm, visiting can be arranged out with these times by prior agreement with the Nursing in Charge. We do ask, where possible, to avoid meal times as this can sometimes result in residents leaving their meals to accept visitors. Resident's partners are welcome to join their family member for a meal if they like.

We aim to provide each resident with a safe, comfortable and homely environment in which to maximise their physical, emotional and psychological potential.

Each resident is supported to feel safe and secure in their environment, confident that all their needs are being met and that Buckreddan Care Centre can be their home for life, if they choose it to be.
